HANAC Youth Programs

Challenging youth to excel in school, guiding them to participate in their community, and preparing them for life in the world of work, are priorities of HANAC’s Youth Programs. These goals are achieved in our Beacon Program, In-School Youth Program, our Out-of-School Time Program, our Councilmatic After-School Program, and our Summer Youth Employment Program.

Beacon Programs
HANAC has two Beacons – school-based, after-school community centers offering young people and their families a range of opportunities to grow and participate actively in the life and spirit of their community.

In-School Youth Program
The HANAC In-School Youth Program targets high school juniors and seniors. It offers them tutoring and study skills training, a Work Readiness Curriculum including career development and job search skills, part-time job opportunities for those who qualify, and guaranteed summer jobs.

Out-of-School Time Program
The Out-of-School Time Program provides an enriching environment with curriculum-based educational and recreational activities including: tutorial/homework help, athletics/team sports, dance, arts and crafts, and board games.

Adolescent Literacy Program
The HANAC Adolescent Literacy Program is located at the Astoria Beacon site at I.S. 204 in Long Island City, It provides junior high school students with specialized services to enhance and approve their literacy skills, and was cited by the New York City Department for Youth & Community Development as one of the best programs of its kind in New York City.
